Monika Pelz is an Austrian author of books for children and young readers. Before studying philosophy, economic and social history, she completed an apprenticeship as a book dealer of second-hand books. After her graduation she worked as a journalist, secretary and translator.

While she was studying at university, Pelz already worked as a scientist and scientific journalist. She processed her experiences as an empirical social researcher in numerous books for children and teens that stand out due to the application of innovative means of design and the linking of realistic and fantasy elements. In the past years she focused on writing historical novels and biographies.

For the components of her work that cast a critical eye on society the author was awarded the German Heinrich Wolgast Award in 1990. In 2000 she received the Austrian Honorary Award for Children’s and Juvenile Literature for her overall work. She was also included in the 2002 IBBY Honorary List.
