The Association of Educational and Cultural Publishers (AECP) became the National Section of IBBY in Romania in 2004 thanks to the recommendation of the Moldovian Section of IBBY. Over 43 of the most important publishing houses in Romania are members of the Section, with activities in the field of educational books and books for children. In 2005 the Section organized for the first time specific departments for creators (authors, illustrators, publishers, translators), promoters (librarians, booksellers, journalists, book distributors), specialists (psychologists, sociology and teaching related issues specialists) and others interested in the books for young people.

The most important activities of the National Section of Romania are:

• September: The School Book Fair Gaudeamus
• November: The International Hall of Books for Young Children, The Mysterious Island – IBBY (1st edition 2004), the primary purpose was to make the public more aware of IBBY as well as to celebrate the Jules Verne Centenary (a UNESCO event);
• March-June: ‘The Joy of Reading’, with the purpose of stimulating the pleasure of reading in children.
• 2nd April-November: ‘Anderseniada – Books for Children Olympics’.
• ‘The Book Worms’ Club

The primary aspects of the activities of the IBBY Section of Romania are presented in the booklet ‘IBBY – The Friend of the Children’s Book’ and in the national magazines: Universul Scoli (The Universe of School) and Luceafarul Copiilor (The Morning Star for Children Magazine).

The National Section of Romania encourages the creation of branches across the country as well as the instigation of local cultural events: book fairs, contests, reading events, conferences, debates, workshops and it also welcomes partnerships with central and regional authorities, institutions and organizations.
