In 1966 the Yugoslavian Section of IBBY hosted the IBBY Congress in Ljubljana, under the title of ‘The Birth of Children’s Books’. Shortly after the formation of the independent state of Slovenia, the Slovene Section of IBBY was established in 1992. Many of the founding members were involved in the former National Section of Yugoslavia.
A large proportion of IBBY Slovenia’s activities are centred around the International Children’s Book Day, celebrating Hans Christian Andersen’s birthday on April 2: an exhibition and symposium are organized at the Children's Library – Pionirska knjiznica, followed by an evening ceremony at the Slovene Writers' Association.
The Section regularly informs the public about IBBY's activities and is closely involved with reading promotion, with such activities as the Slovene Book Quiz. The Sections works towards becoming the focal point for every institution or individual concerned with children's literature in Slovenia. In this way it cooperates with academic institutions, Slovenian journals (such as Otrok in knjiga), authors, illustrators and publishers. It also fosters international links with the International Youth Library (IJB), the Biennale of Bratislava (BIB) and Bookbird, as well with neighbouring IBBY National Sections and regularly recommends Slovenian authors to the IBBY awards and other international awards.
