The Nepalese Society for Children's Literature (NESCHIL) is working as a National Section of IBBY. So it is also called NBBY for this purpose.

Aims and Objectives

NESCHIL was established in 1987 with a view to promote children's literature and reading activities in Nepal bringing together the writers, illustrators, editors of children's books as well as publisherrs, librarians, teachers, and experts in children's activities.

NESCHIL is an independent academic organization has been established

• Organize conferences, seminars, symposiums, workshops and lecture programmes at regular intervals and to encourage its members to participate in such activities
• Carry out research activities in children's books and reading
• Publish journals and newsletters to disseminate knowledge and information about children's books and reading
• Encourage the writers, illustrators, translators and editors for the promotion of children's books and reading
• Organize competition programmes for the writers and illustratios of children's books and to honour writers, illustrators, translators, editors and publishers as well as the individuals for their outstanding contributions in the field of children's literature
• Promote co-operation among the national and international organizations engaged in the development of children's book and reading
• Establish children's libraries and reading centres for children in the country.

Membership

NESCHIL functions by the honorary services of its office holders and members with a budget derived from publications, service charges, membership fees and donation and grants.

According to its constitution registered in the Chief District Officer's office under the then His Majesty's Government of Nepal and now Nepal Government in 1987, has a provision of four types of memberships: General, Institutional, Supporting and Honorary.

Any of the writers, illustrators, editors, translators, critics and publishers of the children's books can get ordinary or life membership. Librarians and school teachers who teach, especialy national and local languages, in the classes are also considered eligible to get the membership in the society. An institution can get a membership by paying the stipulated fees. The supporting membership can be offered to those persons only who are interested in children's literature and are recommended by an existing life member. However, this system is not prevailed upon widely. Honorary membership can be awarded by the executive committee to any individual or institution on the basis of his/her/its contribution in children's literature and reading.

Running Programmes

• Publishes two to four children's literature books every year and sends them to the market. In addition, it has prepared and published a Nepali Children's Encyclopedia with more than 700 pages with financial support from UNESCO, New Delhi and Ministry of Educaion, Nepal and is planning to review and revise it
• Organizes annual conference every year in different parts of the country to make local children and parents aware of the importance of children's literature and reading habits among them
• Publishes journal annually named Bal Sahitya (Children's Literature) in which papers written and presented in the annual conference on different subjects and aspects on children and children's literature are included
• Publishes a quarterly Newsletter to keep its members and others informed about the activities in children's literature and reading. News about children's literature and reading in particular can be sent to its office
• Organizes lectures and talk programmes on various aspects of children's literature and reading
• Gives awards and prizes to the writers and illustrator of the best children's book of the year
• In order to develop reading habits in children, the society has started Children's Reading Programme as a national campaign keeping in view the system of Mobile Library in a box type shelf. This system was started in 1993 with initial support from BOOKS FOR ALL and UNICEF. Also this reading programme aims at establishing libraries in the schools and community centres and extending children's sections in the existing big libraries of the country.

Executive Committee

To run this Society smoothly it has established an executive committee comprising 11 members. These members are elected by the total ordinary and life members every three years. The tenure of the executive committee is generally three years. Some of members can be elected for the consecutive years also. Each member has the right to do so.
