Call for papers
"The Liberated Child – Childhood in the Works of Astrid Lindgren"

Stockholm, Sweden
Papers are invited for the international interdisciplinary conference
celebrating the centenary of Astrid Lindgren, the most famous Swedish
children’s author of all times, and one of the most translated and
best-loved children’s writers of the world.
The conference is organized by the Swedish Institute for Children’s Books
and the Department of Literature and History of Ideas, Stockholm University.
Confirmed keynote speakers at this point are: Dr. Karen Coats (Department of
English, Illinois State University), PhD. Ulla Lundqvist (PhD of comparative
literature, literary critic, author, Stockholm, Sweden) and David Rudd
(Senior lecturer in the Department of Cultural & Creative Studies at Bolton
Institute, Lancashire, England).
The program will include a visit to Vimmerby, the birthplace of Astrid
Lindgren, and Astrid Lindgren World, a theme park based on her children’s
stories.
We invite panel proposals of 3-4 papers that should in some way address the
theme: the life and works of Astrid Lindgren. Literary, historical, social,
comparative and other approaches are welcome. The papers included must not
have been presented before and they must be given by their authors in person
at the conference.
Some of the subthemes may be:
- Astrid Lindgren and the concept of childhood
- Astrid Lindgren as a public figure
- The child and the society
- Non-violence and children’s rights
- Reception and translation of Astrid Lindgren’s works
- Illustrations, transmediations, adaptations
- Children’s literature, modernity and modernism
Panel proposals of 300 words should be emailed to and
include:
1) panel title
2) name, affiliation and email address of the panel coordinator
3) brief description of the panel’s content and the arguments to be
developed
4) names and affiliation of panellists and paper titles
5) outline of the form which the panel will take.
Twenty minutes will be allocated for each paper, and up to two hours for
each panel presentation, allowing time for discussion.
Individual papers proposals of 300 words will also be considered. We welcome
further ideas for mini-seminars, workshops, poster sessions and other
