IBBY Appeal for JapanOn 11 March 2011 a quake of 8.9 magnitude struck the seabed east of Japan. This caused a huge 30-foot Tsunami to crash into the eastern coast killing thousands of people as it swept away boats, cars, schools, and homes. Yet to come was the damage caused to the nuclear power stations causing widespread evacuations.
IBBY will work with JBBY to support the EHON project in the Iwate Province.
Since the "3.11 Ehon project Iwate" began, nearly 100,000 books have arrived at the Morioka City Central Civic Centre. Most of these donations have now been unpacked and sorted and volunteers have been delivering books to the children of the disaster-stricken areas. Local volunteers have been using the books to read to the children. Books and volunteers have also been going to the smaller evacuation centres and temporary housing sites.
Many libraries, day-care centres, and other facilities for children were destroyed, making it difficult for the local public services to house books. In order to deliver books and reading services to children in more remote areas, the “Ehon Car” project was initiated.
Distribution is the biggest problem for the volunteers working with this project.
The Ehon cars are smaller than the regular-sized bookmobiles, which are very expensive to maintain. These large bookmobiles are not suited to the needs and conditions now found in the disaster area. The Ehon cars are mini bookmobiles that can be driven by volunteer staff and are relatively inexpensive to maintain and fuel. Furthermore, they can reach places that the larger bookmobiles cannot reach.

IBBY Appeal 2010 for Pakistan
In September 2010, IBBY launched an appeal to collect funds to help the children of Pakistan whose lives have been drastically affected by the recent flooding.
IBBY Pakistan, based at the Alif Laila Book Bus Society in Lahore, has set up a project to visit children in the refugee camps and the remaining schools – often the same place – taking books, stories and games to help them deal with their situation.

The programme Children in Crisis is aimed at providing support for children whose lives have been disrupted through war, civil disorder or natural disaster. Currently IBBY is supporting projects in Southern Lebanon, Gaza and Colombia. Further projects are planned for Guatemala and Northern Uganda.
A strategic meeting will be held in Biga, Turkey in May to start planning the future of school and rural libraries that are starting to get underway within Afghanistan. With the IBBY National Section in Iran, based at the Children’s Book Council, IBBY will hold a four-day colloquium in Turkey under the title Children's Books, Bridges between Nations. Guests and speakers are invited from international IBBY, Iran, Pakistan, Tajikistan, as well as key people involved in reading, libraries, and the ministries of education in Afghanistan.
