Workshop GuidelinesIBBY will be looking for new projects that are well thought out, manageable, and fall within our prime areas of concern as noted below.
IBBY’s funds will be used as seed money and so proposed projects must be co-financed by other agencies. IBBY funding is capped as described below.
The IBBY Director of Member Services, New Projects and Communications will be available to assist in developing the specific activities, as will volunteers from IBBY members worldwide but the National Section proposing the project must take primary responsibility for developing and administering the project on the ground.
The IBBY Executive Committee will select the proposals to be supported once a year during their second annual meeting in the year before the project is due to start. The total funds available for all projects will be CHF 45,000.00.
Each proposal will be judged on its merits with emphasis on the development of a book culture where at present there is none or it is limited.
- IBBY will only fund one application per National Section per year.
- It may be necessary to limit the number of years in a row that a workshop is supported in each country so that all members have the opportunity to benefit from the programme. Preference will be given to applications made by sections that have not previously been supported by the IBBY-Yamada Fund.
- Only National Sections in good standing would be eligible to receive funding, i.e. sections with no outstanding membership dues and have submitted the required Biennial Report. Projects run by non-IBBY members have to be in partnership with an established IBBY Section.
- It is strongly recommended that for any project that involves the purchase of books, only 25% of the books can be purchased from the project applicant.
- A full written report and financial statement will be required within 6 months of the close of the project. For projects running over a period of time, interim reports are requested.

Project Descriptions
A. INTRODUCTORY WORKSHOPS ON PUBLISHING, WRITING, ILLUSTRATING, USING BOOKS IN SCHOOLS, CREATING A LIBRARY
Description and Level:
These workshops will take place in a region and would be very basic and introductory.
Participants:
The workshop leaders could be a combination of a local person and an expert from outside drawn from the IBBY community. The participants would be drawn from a region-wide group of people interested in the workshop. A minimum number of participants would be required.
IBBY’s role:
- To help find workshop leaders from the IBBY community and organize their participation.
- To help design the workshops if required.
- To fund travel of outside workshop leaders and to help fund the participation of participants from the region.
- To help find other funders.
Funding limit:
CHF 5,000.00
These workshops would require IBBY funding as stated above. However, they should be done on a cost-sharing basis with other agencies, whether local or international such as UNESCO, World Bank, UNICEF, literacy organizations, etc.
B. ADVANCED WORKSHOPS ON PUBLISHING, WRITING, ILLUSTRATING, USING BOOKS IN SCHOOLS, CREATING A LIBRARY, BIBLIOTHERAPY, AND MENTORING
Description and Level:
These workshops would probably take place in a region where there is already an established publishing industry or library sector but which needs more sophisticated training opportunities. They would happen at the request of people in a region who approach IBBY for support and are looking for our help and assistance. This level would also involve the possibility of mentors for publishers, libraries, ministries of education and others who could benefit from short intensive work with an expert.
Participants:
The workshop leaders could be a combination of a local person and an expert from outside drawn from the IBBY community. The participants would be drawn from a region-wide group of people interested in the workshop. A minimum number of participants would be required before IBBY would support the activity. The mentoring programme would be offered very selectively upon the proposal of someone who would like to work with such a mentor.
IBBY’s role:
- To find workshop leaders and mentors from the IBBY community and organize their participation.
