Resolution on Libraries as Responsible Spaces - ALA 2017

At the 2017 Annual Conference of the American Library Association, ALA Council adopted a Resolution on Libraries as Responsible Spaces and charged the Committee on Diversity to “develop, provide, and disseminate materials and programming for libraries that deter hate, foster community, and oppose bigotry toward or oppression against any group.”

The committee has developed a survey to help determine what materials, programming, and other resources related to responsible spaces would be most useful to libraries.  We appreciate your feedback and guidance as we begin to develop these resources.

Please take the survey at, and thank you in advance for also disseminating the survey within your networks.  The survey takes 5-10 minutes to complete and closes on Friday, January 12th.  Any questions can be directed to diversityala.LÖ

Thank your participation and assistance,

ALA Council Committee on Diversity

IBBY Honorary Member, Miep Diekmann (1925 - 2017)

IBBY Honorary Member, Miep Diekmann (The Netherlands), died on Monday, 10 July at the age of 92. From the mid-1950s, Miep Diekmann played a prominent role in the world of children’s books. She stimulated developments within Dutch youth literature through reviews, interviews and readings. She was also a translator and coached budding children’s authors. Her own works number some sixty titles in various genres for differing age groups. When she was a young girl she spent five years in Curaçao: a time that inspired her gripping West Indian tales. Typical of Diekmann’s work are her impressive choice of subjects, her social involvement, the convincing characterizations of the figures in her stories and her confidence in the capacity of the reader – both cognitively and emotionally.

Miep Diekmann considered her most important task was to help children in overcoming their fear of everything out of the ordinary. Many of her books centre on “lone wolves” or individualists since she believed that a person can only be an asset to a group once he or she has learned to cope on their own.

From the foundation of the Dutch IBBY section, Miep Diekmann was one of the important promoters of IBBY. She was named Honorary Member of IBBY in 2006.

36th IBBY Congress 2018

It is with great pleasure that we announce that the 2018 IBBY World Congress will take place in Athens, Greece from 30 August to 1 September 2018. The Congress will be organized by IBBY Greece and be held in conjunction with the festivities surrounding the celebration of Athens as the UNESCO World Book Capital for 2018.

The theme of East meets West around Children’s Books and Fairy Tales reflects the work already accomplished by IBBY Turkey and now it goes forward as the very appropriate theme for IBBY Greece to organize and execute another excellent IBBY World Congress.

We would like to assure all members of IBBY Greece that the IBBY worldwide network will support them in every way it can. News and all developments will be announced and shared as far and wide as possible.

Our most heartfelt thanks go to IBBY Turkey and IBBY Greece. Sincere thanks to the Mayor of Athens and the Athens Convention & Visitors Bureau for their welcome support.

The launch of this new appeal for funds to keep these libraries open and active is to give them hope and lifeline to a better future. Find out more information and how to donate here.

IBBY World Congress 2018

Our world is in turmoil. At the start of the 2017 Bologna Children's Books Fair press conference I talked about promoting international understanding and the current tendency of building walls in order to separate nations from one another.  We are now confronted by a situation that affects IBBY directly.  Our colleagues in Turkey are dealing with a situation in their country that is beyond their control.

However, IBBY needs to react to world events, we are not immune.

So, with a really heavy heart as IBBY president I have to announce that the 2018 IBBY Congress that was scheduled to happen in Istanbul next September has been cancelled.

I want to sincerely thank our IBBY members in Turkey for their dedication, perseverance and good will. They have been preparing for this event for the last 4 years.

IBBY has a two-year cycle and therefore the IBBY network of members still needs to meet in 2018.  The IBBY Executive Committee is looking into various feasible alternatives and we hope to announce a solution by the end of April this year.

Wally De Doncker

IBBY President

Refugees: Children from Central America

The Other Refugees: Children from Central America

Sixty million people around the world became refugees in 2015. Half of them were children. Syrian refugees have been highly visible with good reason. But the approximately hundred and twenty thousand unaccompanied children from Central America that have made and are still making the very dangerous trip to try and find safety and a way to survive in the United States are virtually invisible. And there are an almost equal number of families with children (primarily single mothers) who have also arrived in the same period.
