Les caprices du roi Soleil

King Sun’s Whims

Illustrated by Marie-Ange Dosseh. Selbé series. Dakar, Senegal: BLD / Cotonou, Benin: Ruisseaux d’Afrique, 2000. 32 p. ISBN 99919-53-30-0. Ages 6-9.

Commentary
This is one of six titles in the Selbé series, co-published by BLD and Ruisseaux d’Afrique, that were developed in a workshop organised by BLD in Dakar in 2004. Les caprices du roi Soleil tells the story of the creation of day and night in ancient times, when all the creatures talked with each other and the sun ruled over men, plants, and animals.

All the books in this series are in large format, with full-page colour illustrations and hard covers. The other titles include Waali le petit talibé (Waali, the Little Talibe), which is the story of Waali, who is caught by the police when stealing for his master, the Marabou; and Le jardin des rues (The Street Garden), which is about young Katia, who has lost her mother and finds joy again by helping street children.
