Wade, Mame Daour Ngaari Mawndi Le Taureau fantastique / Yekk wu doy waarNgaari Mawndi, the Fantastic Bull
Illustrated by Moustapha Ndiaye. Dakar, Senegal: BLD, 1997. 28 p. Ages 8 and up.
Commentary This big format picture book is about a bull with magical powers that orders a Peulh shepherd to take his cows to the forest of Saloum. On the way, the herd meet the Cram-Cram (small wicked genies), and a supernatural fight begins between the bull and the Cram-Cram. The text is lively and compelling, and the colour illustrations dominate each double-page spread with force and originality. The page design allows for a comfortable reading of the bilingual French-Wolof text. Wolof, the most widely spoken language in Senegal, is seldom used in children’s books. This text is also available in a bilingual French-Pulaar text (Dakar: BLD, 2003). Pulaar is spoken in Senegal and several other West African countries.
