Commentary
Eight full-colour picture books (published in both French and English) portray the life and sights of Mauritius through the adventures of young Tikoulou. Readers enter the world of Tikoulou through the mystery of the stolen bikes, a visit to Rodrigues Island, or the defence of whales. The bright colours and uniform shades of Henry Koombes’s simple drawings bring the scene to life. Likewise, the big size of these hardcover books will appeal to young readers. Koombes’s work was selected for the exhibition of African illustrators, Amabhuku, held at the Bologna Book Fair in 1999.
