Meet the author, illustrator and translator nominees of the Honour List 2020!

The IBBY Honour List is a biennial selection of outstanding, recently published books, honouring writers, illustrators and translators from IBBY member countries. The IBBY Honour List is one of the most widespread and effective ways of furthering IBBY's objective of encouraging international understanding through children's literature. The titles are selected by the National Sections, which can nominate one book for each of the three categories. For a country with a substantial and continuing production of children's books in more than one language, one book may be submitted for writing and translation in each official language.

Usually, the catalogue is introduced and the books are shown for the first time at the 37th IBBY Congress, which was originally to be held in Moscow last September. Sadly, because of the pandemic, the 37th IBBY Congress was postponed to 10-12 September 2021. The books should have been exhibited at the IBBY stand at the 2021 Bologna Children’s Book Fair, but the Fair had to cancel its in-person event. We feel terribly sorry that the 2020 HL books and the nominees are not getting the visibility that they normally should receive during this time. All the books will be shown and officially presented in September in Moscow. Meanwhile, we wanted to find a way to share and highlight the books and honour the nominees.

This is why we’ve asked all the authors, illustrators and translators nominated in the 2020 selection to send us a picture of themselves with their selected book – book selfies! Enjoy this compilation and meet the creators behind these outstanding books!

Congratulations to all the all the 2020 nominees! The Honour List will be officially presented online and in-person on Saturday, 11 September 2021 at the 37th IBBY World Congress. The nominees who are able to travel to Moscow will receive their diplomas in-person. The rest of the diplomas will be sent to the IBBY National Sections, which will honour their nominees on a more local level. Four out of seven parallel sets of the books are already circulating around the world.
