What touches us most is that, through all the years of her extraordinary success, she never turned away from the little girl she once was—or from the father who could neither read nor write.
She was never embarrassed by him. She spoke of him with tenderness and pride, and her life’s work became, in a beautiful way, a tribute to him.
Dolly showed what one person can do when influence, resources and determination are turned into action. She used her status and her money not simply to speak about inequality, but to confront it directly. She answered the question, “What can one person do alone?” by doing something real, practical and lasting.
Every book she placed in a child’s hands seemed to say: what was denied to one generation need not be denied to the next.
That has been the quiet miracle of the Imagination Library.
Millions of children received books, but behind those books lay something even greater: the conviction that every child deserved a story, a chance to imagine, and the freedom to dream beyond the circumstances into which they were born.
At IBBY, we know this from our own work. For decades, we have carried books across borders, languages and circumstances, placing them where children need them most. We know that a book can change the course of a child’s life.
Dolly Parton did not simply believe this. She lived it. She funded it. She built it. And she made it possible for millions of children.
Her example reminds us that change does not always begin with institutions, governments or movements. Sometimes it begins with one person deciding that success must serve a greater purpose—and then using every resource available to make a difference.
Perhaps that is why her work touched so deeply. It came from memory, from gratitude, and from knowing that a small kindness offered to a child can travel much farther than we will ever know.
Today, we mourn the loss of a remarkable woman, but we also celebrate what she leaves behind: millions of books, millions of children, and a legacy of courage, generosity and action that will continue long after her voice has fallen silent.
We are especially heartened that the Dollywood Foundation has come forward to say that this work will continue. Dolly had planned for its future with them, ensuring that the Imagination Library and its mission would carry on. This is a final, generous act of foresight: making certain that the gift she began will remain in children’s hands for generations to come.
We salute her.
For the books, for the children, and for the love that lay behind them, IBBY International offers Dolly Parton our deepest admiration and heartfelt gratitude.
Sometimes a book is more than a book.
Sometimes it is a way of saying:
I remember where I came from,
and I want something better for you.
