Commentary
Subtitled A South African Counting Book, this excellent publication has double spreads with three levels of access. Each left-hand page has a photograph of an African scene that portrays the number sequence from one to ten, and a simple one-line text. On the right-hand page is a longer text that builds into the story of Nothando harvesting and cooking her pumpkin, together with more pictures and factual information about rural life in KwaZulu-Natal. These concepts are deftly presented, and the details provided are true to life and unglamorous. “Most families can’t afford to cook more than once a day” (no pag.). The book offers information at several levels, with a carefully handled development of vocabulary and educational concepts. The translations into isiXhosa and isiZulu are excellent; one presumes that the same care has been taken with the other languages.
