Le Pays dogon

The Dogon Country

Illustrated by Aly Zoromé. Voyage jeunesse series. Bamako, Mali: Le Figuier, 2006. 38 p. ISBN 2-84258-097-4. Ages 8 and up.

Commentary
This nonfiction picture book is one of three titles in this new series from Le Figuier. The aim of the Voyage jeunesse series is “to let the young discover the beauties of the world, the diversity of cultures and their complementarity, far from clichés and ignorance.” The three books in the series (all published in 2006) take readers to remarkable places in Mali that are listed as UNESCO World Heritage sites: the Dogon country and the cities of Djenné and Timbuktu.

Situated on the border with Burkina Faso, as shown in the accompanying maps, the Dogon region is one of the most visited parts of West Africa. Le Pays dogon provides a thorough introduction to the richness of Dogon life: architecture, daily practices, agriculture, crafts, music, dance, initiation ceremonies, feasts, and religion. Aly Zoromé’s highly detailed colour illustrations occupy most of the large, horizontal pages of this hardcover picture book, accompanied by short, clear texts.
