Ah-Bekutheni?

Illustrated by Vian Oelofsen (illustrations) and Sue Kramer (photographs). Cape Town: Early Learning Resource Unit (ELRU) & Project for the Study of Alternative Education in South Africa (PRAESA), 2001.
Ages 4 and up.

Commentary
This is not a book: it is a set of sturdy A4 cards in bright colour inside a plastic envelope. There is one card for each letter of the alphabet. On the front of each is a photo-illustration montage of a child whose name begins with the appropriate letter of the alphabet. On the back is a multi-lingual text mixing isiXhosa, Afrikaans and English with rhymes, vocabulary extension and sheer fun. It is a splendidly enjoyable and highly educational concept: far more usable than many prosaic alphabet books.  Ah-Bekutheni? was selected as a SACBF Honour Book and its illustrative and photographic artwork won the SACBF Vivian Wilkes Award, both in 2001.
