Scarves for IBBY

In 2020, as a lot of National Sections of IBBY were financially struggling because of the pandemic and the subsequent lock-downs, IBBY began looking for ways to help and support its members. After much thought, we decided to ask some of the world’s greatest children’s book illustrators to design a limited-edition silk scarf that IBBY could sell to raise money to support IBBY’s work around the world. Ten Hans Christian Andersen Award winners generously said yes and created ten beautiful designs for the project. We sincerely thank the artists Albertine, Quentin Blake, Robert Ingpen, Roberto Innocenti, Roger Mello, Farshid Mesghali, Igor Oleynikov, Květa Pacovksá, Peter Sís and Lisbeth Zwerger, for their support.

The resulting scarves were produced with the support of the sponsor of the Andersen Awards, Nami Island Arts and Education Inc. Legendary Korean designer Kang Woo-Hyon designed and oversaw the creation of these beautiful scarves.

The funds raised so far have been used to support the IBBY National Sections continue their work with children. Sadly, this crisis is not over and many projects and activities that bring children and books together are still struggling. This IBBY fundraising project continues and several of these wonderful and exclusive scarves are still available and waiting to be worn

If you are still hesitating, take a look at the lovely scarves worn by IBBY supporters from all over the world. :)

Each of these limited-edition scarves (50 of each design, 50cm x 180cm) is made of 100% Korean silk and is signed by the artist, and includes an image of the Andersen medal, and can be yours for USD 200.00 (+ shipping).

Bookbird. A Flight through Time

Another great present is the recently published Bookbird: A Flight through Time. This stunning book captures in words and images the story of Bookbird. A Journal of International Children’s Literature from its beginning in 1963 as a modest bulletin to become IBBY’s internationally acclaimed quarterly publication.

Bookbird: A Flight through Time is essential reading for teachers and students at all levels, librarians, authors, illustrators, publishers, historians of children’s books and childhood, and anyone interested in the development of children’s literature in the 20th and 21st centuries. It is an authoritative, accessible and informative history of children’s literature internationally. The history of Bookbird is intertwined with that of IBBY and the International Youth Library in Munich, all founded by Jella Lepman following the end of World War II.

The book is edited by Valerie Coghlan, President of the Bookbird Inc. Board and Evelyn Freeman Secretary of the Bookbird Inc. Board. The book cover was designed by the Russian 2018 Hans Christian Andersen Award winner for illustration Igor Oleynikov. We warmly thank all contributors and the editors who worked completely on a voluntary basis.
