The new OEPLI catalogue, Literatura Infantil y Juvenil Española. Selección OEPLI, is a selection of 200 recommended titles by Spanish writers and illustrators, presented in Spanish and English.
The Spanish Section of IBBY is known as OEPLI (Spanish Organization for Children and Young People’s Literature). OEPLI was founded in 1982 as a non-profit organisation to promote books for children and young people as well promote reading activities.
OEPLI is organized in four regional branches along the four Spanish cultural and linguistic lines: CLIJCAT, for the Catalonian branch; GALIX, for the Galician branch; GALTZAGORRI, for the Euskal Herria branch; and the CSL, for the Castilian branch.
As a member of IBBY, OEPLI also participates on an international basis, as much in fairs (as the Children’s Book Fair in Bologna), Congresses (such as the World Congresses organized by IBBY). In this respect, OEPLI maintains and promotes relations with the countries of Latin America, by means of contributions, donation of books, and other activities.
The main objectives of OEPLI are:
- The promotion and coordination of the professional interests of its members.
- To collect, promote, plan and execute projects, initiatives and actions for the promotion and diffusion of children and young people’s books as well as reading among children and young people all over Spain.
- To give advice and cooperation to organisations or persons, central or local governments and professional sectors interested in children's books and reading, inside Spain and abroad.
- To assume the Spanish representation in IBBY.
OEPLI performs many activities, the main ones are:
- Exhibitions of children’s books organized by each regional branch.
- Travelling exhibitions of children’s books throughout the whole country in order to diffuse the books exhibited previously by each regional branch.
- The International Children’s Book Fair.
- Exhibitions.
- National Congresses on books for children and young people.
- Organization of the Prize Lazarillo to the best unpublished literary or illustrated works for children and young people.
- Celebration of the International Children's Book Day.
- Compile of register of authors and illustrators of children’s books.
OEPLI and its four branch sections: Consejo General del Libro, ClijCAt, Galtzagorri Elkartea and Gálix have published the catalog LITERATURA INFANTIL Y JUVENIL ESPAÑOLA. Selection OEPLI / CHILDREN'S AND YOUNG LITERATURE FROM SPAIN, into Spanish and English, with a selection of 200 titles of children's and youth books, of Spanish writers and illustrators, published throughout 2017, high quality titles which makes them worthy of being part of this list of honor because they are considered significant within the great production existing in our country.
In 2010, IBBY Spain was host to the 32nd IBBY Congress in Santiago de Compostela and sponsor of International Children's Book Day.
