Library as a Space of Psychological Support for Children
Amidst ongoing missile attacks and infrastructure disruptions in Kyiv, the National Library of Ukraine for Children, in collaboration with IBBY Ukraine, implemented this project to transform libraries into safe havens for psychological support. Targeting children aged 4–17 and their parents, the initiative addressed the critical need for mental health awareness and trauma relief during wartime. Through a blend of bibliotherapy, art therapy, and play therapy, the project aimed to foster resilience, reduce anxiety, and promote a reading culture, proving that libraries serve as essential spaces for emotional “unloading” and community cohesion even in conflict zones.
The project featured a major training seminar for 70 librarians and specialists from 20 regions, led by nine experts including psychologists, art therapists, and crisis consultants. Participants acquired practical tools for supporting children in crisis, such as “square breathing” techniques and the use of metaphorical associative cards. Direct activities for children included over 40 events, such as the “BOOKtrips” programme where children explored London with Paddington Bear to learn English and process emotions, and the “Joyful Zoo” art therapy session. More than 300 children attended these specialised sessions, while over 1,000 benefited from the broader programme. Notably, children created “Countries of Emotions” using clay, visually externalising feelings like anger and joy, which facilitated open discussions about mental health.
Qualitative results indicated a significant shift in children’s ability to identify and regulate emotions, with many reporting reduced anxiety and increased social connection. Parents and librarians reported gaining vital skills to support children’s psychological well-being, with 100% of training participants confirming they would apply the new methods in their work. The project reached approximately 15,000 people online and engaged 600 new library visitors. Sustainability is ensured through the integration of these therapeutic methodologies into the library’s regular programming, the publication of methodological guides on stress and loss, and the establishment of a permanent network of trained specialists committed to maintaining these safe spaces for Ukraine’s youth.
